Chris and Noah created an instant bond over their shared hatred of the Shure SM7B Microphone. Meeting online in a Audio Memeposting group is an unlikely set up, but the tale grows more common in this day and age.
After talking online the two realized they shared quite the similar musical geography whilst still branching out in separate and even opposite directions. A requisite love of classics like Aphex Twin, SquarePusher, Venetian Snares, and most Warp Records artist served as the home base of their sound design. Chris veers off into the more chaotic/experimental/harsh/blip-bloopy world while Noah tracks off in the other direction with kawaii/cutesy/energetic/pop-punk sounds taking the fore. The two see eye-to-eye on crazy rhythms, syncopation, time signatures and harmony, however, so there are no real hang-ups and a full mesh of their sounds is realized.
The track itself, 水溜り, marks a genre shift that is heretofore unexplored but marks a logical progression from Eval Copies hardcore, syncopated rhythms, and Noah's mental math rock with crazy timings, into a poppier, more listenable style, that is indebted to the Odo-Shinko chord progression. Chris handled the main engineering and production, programming the drums, keyboards, synths, and mixing. Noah handled the guitars, including Bass, Rhythm, and the Guitar solo, as well as adding a percussive layer to the drums, the music box intro, and mastered it all at the end. Both artists worked together on modifying the form, progression, and general vibe which came together quickly and logically, with very little push-back from either side.
They knew they had to have lyrics in Japanese, and between utilizing multiple programs to help write, translate, and sing, they managed to pull it off. Please enjoy this first collaboration between Evaluation Copy and If I Look Strong; You Look Strong in the Kawaii Future Bass genre!
